Learning to Role Play
For those that are new to free-form RP, don't be afraid to ask for advice!
Communication is the key to playing in a way that is fun for others. And
when others are enjoying yourself, the feeling is reciprocated.
Most of you that are new to this sort of game have little idea of how to
go about interacting effectively with others. Learning how to entertain
can often be more than a little difficult... And explaining it isn't any
easier. There's a lot of good advice through the 'news role play' files,
but it often takes judgment to figure out when to use what. And that only
comes with experience.
Fortunately there are a lot of experienced players here to watch. Ask to
sit in and just observe for a while. Read through the poses and see how
they interact with each other. Take a look at the OOC communication they
may be participating in. Ask questions (but try not to pester... which
can be a hard balance to reach).
There are log files that can be read which will help show the end result
of a good scene. And there are the public channels that can be listened
to. There is also the Style channel, which was created as a forum for new
players to ask questions of old fogies.
When playing, there are a few basic things to remember:
Communicate! It'll take a while to get used to open poses, it'll take a
while to gain the sort of trust where players are able to include each
others characters in their poses. Until then, the best thing to do is
communicate. A question now can save a lot of heartache in the future.

Never Pose the Result: Again, some players are used to each other and
will do so... but even they can goof up. It's always better to show
attempts instead of successes.

Pose Results for Your Character: When others attempt to do something to
your character, be sure to pose the result for them. Players that feel
their poses are being ignored often become very frustrated.

Give Reasons: Whether you decide an attempt to effect your character is
successful or not, including a /reason/ can make a world of difference.
This can often lend a level of detail that wouldn't otherwise be seen
and that is often appreciated.

Get Thwapped: There's a big difference between a character being harmed
and surviving and a character surviving by never being harmed in the
first place. The first is exciting and gives the other players a sense
of accomplisment. The second is boring and often frustrating.

Go for the Bronze: When first starting on a game, don't try to play the
biggest and meanest. Go for someone that is barely above the grain.
The reason for this is to quite simply learn your way around with a
character that can be more dynamic than a power house. Strength lends
to little thought. And, honestly, strength may mean quite a bit in
table top or a mud, but it is much less important in a game based on
free-form RP.

Develop! Even the lowliest of characters can become the greatest of
heros over time. And is often much more enjoyable than starting out at
the other end of the spectrum. Improving a character is a simple
process that is based on the RP one goes through... a system that
concentrates on the fun of play being applied to a character.
