Inflicting Injury

In a good combat, wounds are clues that point to the superior combatant in
a test of skill. They tell a character when things are not going well for
them. A scrape once might mean a deadly cut or slash next. So how does a
game without any sort of real stats differentiate? Through descriptive
results, of course.

Non-impact hits and near misses: These are results that might encourage a
character to be a bit more careful as an laster beam whizzes past their
ear, a vibroblade rips a hole in their jacket, or holes appear near them
in their cover. Basically things that don't damage the character
themselves.

Scratches, scrapes and bruises: This category covers the types of injuries
that, while painful, are unimportant and don't get in the way of a
character's actions. Bruises, muscle strains, nose bleeds, broken
fingernails, black eyes, etc.

Cuts, Pricks, and Sprains: Slightly more dangerous and painful, yet not
close to life threatening. Things aren't going well. A cut small enough
to bleed freely, but not too large that it won't coagulate in a reasonable
amount of time. Cracked bones, sprained ankle or wrist, etc.

Serious Blood Loss Wounds: Without first aid of some kind, the character
is going feel the damage caused by the wounds and it will impact on their
performance. The wounds still aren't serious enough to require a medic's
attention, however. A hand over the stab wound, a bit of cloth tied over
it for a makeshift bandage, etc will help out. Broken bones or severely
wrenched limbs also fit into this. Wounds at this level will tend to be
disabling for a while, and are life threatening without some sort of aid.

Life-Endangering Wounds: A major knife cut, sword wound, or effect that
hits a critical part of the body. Blood loss and shock will be very
serious. This is the sort of wound that will kill someone if it's not
treated within 15 or so minutes. First aid will extend that time, but the
character will need the life-saving skills of a doctor soon.

Maim or Sever: These wounds will cause permanent types of damage.
Something is missing or so badly damaged that the character will need the
part regenerated or replaced. Expert first aid will be needed
immediately, and it's time to yell for a doctor.

Mortal Wounds: A vital organ has been struck and damaged enough that the
character is sure to die, and quickly, without some serious clerical
intervention. There's still a chance for survival, especially in the high
tech areas Jupiter's Childrens is prone to, but the help will have to
arrive quickly.

Death Blow: This is something that shouldn't be seen much in Jupiter's
Children, and if it is, it should be agreed on before hand by those
involved. A blow to a critical organ, such as the heart or brain,
that will kill the enemy within seconds. Even with near-Sublimed tech
this level of wound is still deadly. A character /might/ survive, but
it is not likely. Even with the aid of a well equipped medical bay
immediately available it would be touch and go... In fact, it might be
easier for the doctor to let the character die and then clone them.
