Role Playing Concepts

This is mostly a meandering of thoughts and ideas that will, hopefully, make RPing on Jupiter's Childrens easier and funner. And maybe help out in other places as well.

Currently there is no coded RPG system on Jupiter's Childrens. Right now we rely on the common sense and ability of the players and staff to get along with each other and develop the best game possible with each others needs in mind.

A cooperative venture, so to speak.

RP System

Those from several different kinds of MUSHes and MUXes should be fairly familiar with this style of play in concept, though the application process here will seem somewhat different. Others from more structured environments (World of Darkness MU*'s come to mind) may find everything about this unfamiliar, and perhaps even too unrestricted. Try not to go wild. :)

And then there are those from places where there is minimal or no involvement with staff during character RP, usually due to some sort of coded RPG system (a system that does comparisons of traits and informs the players of the results). This doesn't mean MUDs, there are a number of RP-intensive games like this out there that use such systems. To them, the system here may not seem structured and confining enough.

The best method to roleplay is to remember the rights of others to consent to your role playing, and your own rights to consent to theirs, combined with the possible results of In Character Consequences. If a scene looks like it will go in the direction of something to which you strongly object, make sure the others involved are aware so the matter can be worked out. Likewise, if someone objects to the direction a scene is going, strive to compromise.

While IC consequences to actions should logically be carried out, no one is required to ever play out a scene that they find personally objectionable. But first see if the end results can be worked out, as the end result can be alluded to rather than RPing out the scene. Other players should be more than willing to help out in these situations, since they may come across problems of similar natures of their own at some time.

But remember that there's a big difference between finding something objectionable and being an ass.

One of the best things to remember is that a while good player may be out to kill your Character they don't have anything against you personally. Well.... They shouldn't!

Conflict

The best of Role Playing tends to involve character development to some degree or another. Change, in other words, is a hallmark of a good story. Change is brought out by conflict, opposition, the achievement of goals. A good story has a plot that makes it interesting to follow along with the process of change. The same goes for Role Playing. If someone stays the same, and tries to keep their world the same, they tend to make for boring interactions.

Of course, the meaningless meetings in a tavern that have absolutely nothing plot worthy can be fun, too. :)
