A combat is resolved fastest when the characters involved are mismatched.
The greater the mismatch, the quicker the conflict should end.

Timing issues: Some events happen in an 'instant'. The swing of a club is
fast, but a pistol's trigger can be pulled even quicker. An explosion set
off by an electronic trigger can be even quicker. However, all these
things assume that the attack is prepared. If a pistol is pointed in the
wrong direction, a club can easily hit before the weapon is brought to
bear.

Tactical Advantage: Sometimes one character will just have an advantage
over others due to placement. Fighting up a narrow stairway, for
instance. Or from atop a table, or with back to a corner. Each affords a
character some advantages which should be considered.

Regulating Combat: Figuring out when what happens to who is an art that is
best learned through practice. The usual 'fair' way to handle combat role
playing is to have each character pose in turn. But this is not always
the best method because of different posing styles. The best bet is to
communicate as well Out of Character (paging is best, the OOC pose command
and various channels can be used if needed). Note that effectively using
OOC communication can take practice. Enough needs to be done so the RP
rolls smoothly, yet not so much that the RP is stalled.
