Staff Involvement In Role Play

There's major philosophical differences in how Jupiter's Children handles its players' Role Play and other games (especially many in the superhero genre). The most noticeable difference is in how JC handles In Character Actions = In Character Consequences (otherwise known as ICA=ICC). The principle of ICA=ICC on consent-based games is that if a player has their character perform an action then that player automatically gives permision for any consequences that may arise from that action.

In many games, staff keep an eye on the actions of the characters and devise suitable responses. Other players are also encouraged to establish responses or help out with the process. And staff members will usually enforce the consequences that other players believe appropriate. For example: A player that has his character attack the mayor can be assured of a response driven by the staff with the goal of showing the In Character consequence to that action. A player that has his character attack another character, their property, or something that concerns them gives permission for any retaliation by that other player's character. And this retaliation, being a consequence, is supported by the staff.

This is how typical consent-based games are administered.

In Jupiter's Children, we believe the player is perfectly capable of coming up with that on their own. There are many places in these news files where it is mentioned that the game is for responsible and mature players. It isn't just about how to treat other players; it's also about how to approach RP on the game. It is one of the responsibilities of the players to consider consequences and play them out.

Does that mean the player has to come up with everything that happens to their character? Of course not! There's lots of help available! Ask other players for ideas, hash out solutions with the staff, use movies, novels, and TV shows for inspiration.

The key here is that even asked for ideas, the Staff won't enforce any of them on the player's character.

Because Jupiter's Children believes that the best person to decide what ultimately is appropriate for a character is that character's player.
