Every player has artistic control over the events that directly effect
their character. Direct effects are those that result in such things as
the death or physical harm to the character. One should always, however,
be prepared to accept the In Character consequences for the Character's
actions. Try to anticipate consequences ahead of time. (Most people with
a knife as their only weapon who decide to insult a fully armored and
cybered space marine should not only expect to loose any physical attack
that results, but end up as a bloody smear on the wall.) The emphasis is
on being prepared, however, not on acceptance.
Out of Character conflicts aside, it should be understood that In Character
consequences are likely to result from any sort of Role Playing and should
be played /with/ rather than against. Take advantage of what happens to
the character, their plans, or their belongings to further RP rather than
struggle against it. Sometimes the way to work with something isn't
obvious... be willing to ask and take suggestions if unsure. Or take a
break for a while to think about things. Good players won't mind waiting a
reasonable time. (Also take a look at 'news role play' for other
suggestions.)
If one finds that the logical result of their actions is far in excess of
what is reasonable, talk to the other players involved and try to work out
a pleasant compromise. If one cannot be worked out, then try working
backwards through time to look for a good break-point to go in another
direction. The research of different avenues to the resolution of a scene
is usually much more interesting than an argument.
And remember, just because something may happen does not mean the event
actually has to be Role Played. Being tortured isn't something most people
would like to play out, but the results of the torture could be played with
the actual torture being handled through non-graphic or non-detailed OOC
discussion. Take some time to think through the end results of such
actions as well, consider the long-term effects. Can you use this conflict
to improve the character? Sometimes the answer is as suprising as it is
opaque.
The last thing that should be needed is staff mediation on any matter.
Why?
Because players here at Jupiter's Childrens should be fully capable of
resolving things themselves. That's part of what maturity is about. But
sometimes it just seems impossible. In these cases, seeking outside help
is recommended.
But don't expect that help to be all that helpful. What's that? Well,
Jupiter's Childrens is a game. As most OOC conflicts arise in a game
because matters were taken too seriously, problems will be treated as if
they are playable.
And since this game is deliberately designed to give staff as little
control over the players as possible (see 'news pol concepts'), there's
usually only one result.
Don't make us make fun of you!
