It comes up on occasion when thinking about powers, abilities, weaknesses and other aspects of a character. Just why would something like the Jupiter Ignition alter them in a specific way? Why would someone, for example, end up like a Bram Stoker's Dracula? Or an Egyptian Mummy?
Identity.
A sense of identity is a powerful thing, and a loss of that sense can be devastating to a person's psyche. This is much of the basis for psychological torture.
Theory has it that meta-humans that seem to be traditional monsters are that way because of their internal struggle to gain a sense of self. When first developing their powers, the abilities either manifest in a way they can identify or they subconsciously manipulate their powers to mimic something they understand.
