ROCK-STAR FIRST WAVES
The positives: First Waves have a lot of resources. First off, their activities were covered by the media like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Whether hero, villain, or gray, First Waves ARE rock stars, and have fan bases, web-sites dedicated to their exploits, and rich histories. Using this fame to their advantage, First Waves are generally untouchable by the law, unless, of course, they do something truly terrible to civilians. But generally even these activities are considered “Media Events” by the corporations and the police try and stay out of it as much as possible, preferring to let the “Heroes” take care of it. Many First Waves came up with the idea of incorporating as a way to get around the loss of their legal rights, and as such, most First Waves ARE incorporated, even if their “corporation” does nothing but churn out tee-shirts and posters of the Meta in question.
The negatives: There are few First Waves who are not registered for a few reasons. Most have already broken the three strikes you’re out rule, and were ordered by judges to be registered. This is true of the “heroes” as well, because their major encounters with villains caused property damage which is a crime. Of course, being registered is not necessarily a negative. You can now battle in the streets unhindered by legalities, and because you are probably incorporated, you live a nice life. However, the government knows exactly who you are, and the media generally knows where to find you. Like any celebrity, your ability to have privacy of any kind is almost nil. It will therefore be difficult for you to do anything truly insidious.
Practical Role-Play: Your character is famous for being a hero, villain, or “chaotic” to the media, simply grey-shaded in philosophy to yourself. Even if you are a vile villain, you are also a media darling. If you are a villain, strangely, you have fans who go nutzo when you commit a crime. Sometimes you commit crimes just to keep your fans happy. Life is nuts. It’s also in the Fast Line. Drive, baby, Drive! The authorities leave you alone, but the media doesn’t and the corporations are always offering sponsorship deals, making your life a parade of public super-battles, privacy invasions, and television commercial shoot dates.
SHADOW FIRST-WAVES
Whether registered or not, you are not a rock-star, you have no fame, very few outside the government know you are a Meta or even know of your existence. This is by design. You are one of the power brokers working in the shadows of society. You have, over the last twenty years, amassed a vast fortune and great influence. You may be a driving force in one of the major corporations that regularly battle the state and federal government for control over key issues. You are a power player, and whether your intentions are benevolent, detrimental, or merely self-interested, you keep your name out of the headlines, but your finger on the pulse of Los Angeles and beyond.
Positives: You are very influential and have vast resources to couple your experience and power as a Meta. You can cause events to occur and have mastered the art of never leaving a paper trail that leads those events back to you. This enables you the element of surprise. You are probably very well known in the upper circles. When you threaten someone in that upper crust circle, they will probably turn white and do what you want. In this regard, you have more ability to influence the government, corporations, criminal organizations, media, and other elements of the city without anyone ever knowing.
Negatives: Being invisible means exactly that. You could eat your lunch in front of the big media companies and nobody would notice or care. You have to be careful about engaging in physicality because if the media were to cover your exploits, your status as a Shadow might be lost, which would mean a sudden influx of loss of privacy as the media tries to make you into their new “Meta Darling” which nets them ratings and you vast headaches as it will be harder to manipulate the city if you are the one in the spotlight.
Practical Roleplay: Shadows are for the players who prefer mastermind type roleplay, whose characters probably make up the fabric of high society roleplay, where political intrigue, spy games, and shadow wars take precedence over big super hero battles. You manipulate, not participate, unless something really hairy is going down.
SECOND WAVE METAS
You have just reached maturity or are a late-bloomer, and your powers have just arrived. You are a complete rookie with your powers, and at the start of the D1 scenario, have yet to make your first appearance. You have the choice to become a rock star or a shadow, but as a rookie you will most likely not have full access to your powers. Instead, you will discover those powers through character growth in-play.
Positives: Second Waves have the opportunity to become the new media darlings. Just like when a new star in the music or film industries becomes a hot commodity by the media, a new Meta keeps things fresh and therefore, the character has the chance to become extremely popular by the media. You also can decide to register or not register. Not having had powers before, you were simply a regular citizen, so you start D1 unregistered. It is therefore your choice to register or not ICly.
Negatives: You are inexperienced and not nearly as powerful as the First Waves. Battle against a first wave by yourself will most likely lead to a humiliating experience. You are not immensely wealthy unless you come from an affluent family, and are not yet protected by a corporation, making you vulnerable to the authorities if you are unregistered and commit a crime, which includes assault or property damage.
Practical Roleplay: You are intentionally playing a rookie, so have a lot of fun with this. Make mistakes ICly, seek mentorship from a First Wave or Irregular, and be prepared to ICly wrestle with whether to register or not, becoming a new “media darling” and the complete loss of your privacy, how your family and friends might deal with you gaining super powers, and all the other aspects of becoming a new super hero, villain, or someone who skirts on the grey side.
- There's a lot I like in here, and may be incorporated in the general news files. --JupiterAdmin
