To make it easier on players, it can be assumed that creatures that
basically match humans are pretty common. Two arms, two legs, a head on
top with mouth and eyes, etc, the usual Humanoid sort of thing. There
are, of course, all sorts of body types other than humanoid that are
possible. It doesn't matter so much what a character looks like as what
they can do.
Just about anything a player can imagine is possible to play here... But
be careful not to get too weird. Not only can it become difficult to
play, but it may not be all that fun for others. The only real regulation
for that, though, is experience.
Another thing to take in account is technology... Between cybernetics,
nanotech, bio-engineering, genetic manipulation, and a host of other
methods even the basic Hono Sapiens can become quite varied. Add in a few
thousand years in competitive environments and there can even evolutionary
differences.
Most characters will, of course, be basically human in origin Just
changed in some way or another to be a 'meta.' Humans can be born
metahumans (most of which will be in their teens up to early twenties),
they can become metahumans due to Strange Accidents with Weird Goo or Rays
(tm), they can be the subjects of purposful experiments (usually for
super-soldier sorts of things). Or they can just be different enough from
the average human to warrant being a metahuman.
What a character can be, species wise, is as varied here as the comics and
stories that inspired this game. Again, most will be human, but the
exceptions can be quite dramatic. Aliens. Mythological figures. Robots
and androids. Etc.
If you're modeling your character based on published material then you
already have a good amount of source material to help with selecting what
the character is, as well as what is possible to be. Chances are you
already have a good idea, in fact.
If you're making it up... Just try to be logical about it. First decide
if being a meta based on humans is possible. If not, then think about the
weird stuff. Try to keep things logical, since that makes the concept
more acceptible to others.
And if that fails... Just have fun with it. :)
