Player Affinity
In order to help keep applications as short as possible, Jupiter's Children decided to focus their application process on something that is rarely given any notice in the realm of Superhero genre games. Most of the time the applications at a superhero game are about the player proving they know everything they possibly can about the character (and sometimes more!). These applications can be huge in length, dozens of pages on the short side.
Jupiter's Children wanted to be different. Kimi wanted getting a character to be as easy as possible yet to still require some thought and consideration. So instead of revolving around information about the character, the application process focuses on a few simple questions. The most important of which is:
"Why does the player like the character?"
By putting the reasons they like their characters in words, by writing it down, it is hoped that the players will find it easier to role play their characters. Players should note that they don't have to be logical or precise about their reasons. Saying they like a character because of appearance, ability, history, or any other reason is okay. Just give some reasons! :)
Another way to look at it is: what is it about this character that creates enthusiasm? What is it that causes you, the player, to want to spend your time playing the character? There has to be something... else why do it?
Read on for some examples of what other people said in their affinity sections.
Examples of some Affinity sections:
Kimberly: I rather liked the idea of a fairly normal, shy computer geek that ended up with powers as she explores the possabilities of the world around her. She started out as a human, if exceptionally skilled with computers, and through random events ended up being infected with a mutagenic nano virus. She has since had to cope with the infection, with the powers it has given her, and the person that did it to her... She's made friends and enemies, but whether she ends up Good or Evil will be the result of her experiences. In short, I really like the potential she has for development. She's also really, really cute! :)
Damion: I like this character because the concept has been rolling around for years. What started off as an innocent, even growing up managing to cling to being good, and then through no fault of his own finally being pushed to the point where he snaps and goes about as deep into the dark side as possible. Hitting one of the more sensitive areas in some peoples lives, religions, by targeting those areas specifically. One of the coldly violent super villains that any hero needs.
Warden Smiles: I love the idea of this character. Having the ability to manipulate, coerce, even brainwash any metas that end up in the special prison. This should create a lot of story and allow for some real versatility in the role-playing. Now getting caught will have storyline stakes for all the bad guys. This should be lots of fun.
Cinnamon: To be honest... Cinnamon is mostly modeled after a character I saw in a manga that could control tentacle monsters. It was totally hot, extremely naughty, and a fun read. I just like the idea of defeating female characters with strong, slimy, penetrating tentacles that break their will. Seems like fun! :) But at the same time, that seemed awfully one-dimensional so I gave her a take-over the world mentality, made her just a bit crazy, and, most importantly, decided she'd be pretty likable in a lot of ways.
More on the way once I dig them up.
