We don't enforce a background, but do recommend one. It helps to know
where your character has been, where they might be going, and what
happened to them over their past. Note that the help isn't for the staff,
but for the player. Some people can make up backgrounds on the fly,
tossing a past into RP, while others like to have everything laid out
before hand. Pick what's best for you.

Since backgrounds are optional, there's a few ways they can be set up. If
a player wants their background visible to other players, they can simply
set up a trait class (ie: background) and use +cset to set it on their
character. If the background is not locked any part of it can be updated
as needed. With a little work, trait names can become 'chapter' names for
a background. If for some reason a player decides they don't want their
background visible to others later, they can remove the Background trait
class from the traitclasses attribute on their CTO.

A background can also be set with the +notes command. The usage is a
little different, but unless the +note is set visible no other player will
be able to view it. With the notes command, a background can be placed on
an object and that object can be given or shown to others.

Finally, background information for characters can end up in various areas
of the theme news.
